Mauritius is gradually assembling all the ingredients to widen its access to tertiary education and transform into a leading knowledge hub in the region.

Three new university campuses namely at Réduit, Montagne Blanche and Pamplemousses are expected to be completed by the end of 2013.

The minister of Tertiary Education, Science, Research and Technology, Dr Rajesh Jeetah stated that a wind of change is blowing over the tertiary education landscape as Mauritius is crafting its reputation as a reliable provider of the same. The government has earmarked Rs 800 million for infrastructural resources for the tertiary education sector for the period 2012-2014. “Locations have been identified and consultants have already devised their master plans. They are currently finalising the details of the project. Works with respect to the additional campus at Réduit have already started. We hope to start construction work for the university campuses at Pamplemousses and Montagne Blanche on some 50 acres of land each by July,” said Dr Jeetah.

He pointed out that the project is in line with the government’s vision to increase the enrolment rate in tertiary education to around 70 per cent by 2015 and to attract 100,000 foreign students to the island by 2020.
Similar projects are in the pipeline to improve access to higher education.

This includes a business school at Ebène, use of the former MBC premises at Forest Side for teaching purposes and the setting up of a school of medicine at Bel Air.
