Following his party’s defeat at the regional election on Sunday, Nicolas Von-Mally, the incumbent minister of Fisheries and Rodrigues, has expressed his intention to give up part of his portfolio.
He has asked the Prime Minister Dr Navin Ramgoolam, who is on a state visit in India, to relieve him from the responsibility of Rodriguan affairs. He wants to keep only Fisheries ministry.
“It is a question of principle as I do not want my party to be an obstacle to Organisation du Peuple Rodriguais (OPR). I want the newly elected party (OPR) to work autonomously and without any hindrance,” said Von-Mally. However, he stated that he will not resign from the National Assembly and will continue to work as minister.
When asked who is likely to take over, he said that it is the PM’s prerogative. According to former chief commissioner Gaetan Jhabimessur, “The post of minister of Rodrigues is like an empty box without any executive power as it does not take any decision.”
