Pointe d’Esny declared the Third Ramsar Site was inaugurated on Thursday on the occasion of the World Wetlands Day.
This marks the date of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands on February 2, 1971, in the Iranian City of Ramsar. This year’s theme is ‘Wetlands and Tourism”.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister of Agro Industry and Food Security, Satish Faugoo said that the rivers, lakes and marshes of the world which are actually wetlands, play an important role in the water cycle as they contribute to the regulation of water flow and the maintenance of water quality. “These should be protected,” he highlighted.
According to him, ecotourism is one niche market within the larger and rapidly expanding nature tourism market.
He cited as example another Ramsar site in Mauritius which is the Rivulet Terre Rouge Estuary Bird Sanctuary (RTREBS). “We have built a bird hide there and now we are generating income and employment and the inhabitants are contributing towards the sustainable development of Mauritius,” he said.
