In a bid aimed at mitigating the effects caused by high petrol prices and other external factors Air Mauritius increased the prices of airfare tickets by 5 per cent on Wednesday.
However, tickets to Réunion Island and Rodrigues were exempted from the hike.
Air Mauritius executive vice president-commercial and communications Donald Payen confirmed to The Independent that flight tickets between Rs 20,000 and
Rs 40,000, will have varying hikes between Rs 1000 to Rs 2000.
“This 5 per cent rise forms part of the regular revision of air fare prices Air Mauritius performs according to our costs, which are determined by external factors such as rise in petrol for example,” said Payen.
This will not be the only extra payment passengers flying to Europe will have to make this year as the increase excludes the mandatory Carbon Emission Tax the European Union imposed on all flights to and from Europe from January this year.
“We have not determined the exact parameters of the tax yet, as it will be paid next year. However, there are certain airlines such as Lufthansa who have already put it into action. Passengers flying to Europe on Air Mauritius airline should expect another increase in airfare prices later on during the year owing to this tax,” added Payen.
