Municipality of Port Louis’ project to replace the current street lamps with those that run on solar energy has reached an advanced stage. This was confirmed to The Independent by lord mayor Mahmad Kodabaccus.
This is being done at an investment of about Rs 800 million. China is financially helping the municipal council for this project. “We are faced with a bill of around Rs 40 million that is difficult to pay each year. To this end, we have decided to go ahead with our plan to make Port Louis a ‘Green Capital’ by opting for solar energy. This will save us some Rs 1.5 million in the future,’’ he said.
He highlighted that with this money the municipal council will be able to focus on other projects.
“Port Louis will soon be an example of a city that advocates sustainable development. It will also be recognised as a safe destination,” he said.
A total of 440 solar streetlights will be placed in key places of the capital such as Champ de Mars, China Town, Magon Street and Poudrière Street.
The lord mayor will also encourage the construction of green buildings. Installation of solar water heaters in each building will be mandatory.
“Everyone is concerned about climate change. We should take action and act on a local level. If we have good practices in one area, we should be able to duplicate this everywhere in Mauritius. We need to get organised so that we can go forward together,” he said.

It’s an inspiring initiative but, isn’t Rs 800 million too costly!!?
