The Anti-Fraud Unit of the Central Water Authority (CWA) is determined in pursuing its struggle of tracking down those bypassing water meters. By the end of last week, the CWA had registered four cases at Baie du Tombeau involving illegal water connections.

Communication manager Bishek Narain disclosed that since the beginning of this year, 250 cases of illegal connections have been detected by the CWA. These cases represent a loss of Rs 2 million for the CWA.

Narain added that, the cases not only cause loss to the Authority but also slows the water supply to consumers getting water through the affected networks. The Anti-Fraud Unit is conducting inspections across the country. Earlier, an awareness campaign was launched to encourage the public to report suspicious water connections.

The CWA Act 2005 stipulates that if any person commits an offence under this Act for domestic consumption, he will be liable to pay a fine not exceeding Rs 50,000 and a risk of imprisonment not exceeding two years. Regarding illegal usage of water for industrial use, a fine not exceeding Rs 200,000 will be levied and the accused risks imprisonment not exceeding two years.
