Govt to introduce digital signatures

In a bid to make the island a safe and preferred ICT destination, the government will soon adopt the Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology.

According to this system, sensitive documents and data are sent between two points using digital signatures, a system of pairs of keys known as a public key and a private key.

Only the person who has a digital signature can initiate and verify the document. The PKI is considered the most secure way to send information online as opposed to other methods in which the username and password can be misused.

The development of an action plan on the PKI was recently approved by the Cabinet due to considerable increase in electronic transactions.

ICT minister Tassarajen Pillay Chedumbrum believes that it is imperative to provide the necessary infrastructure and logistics to transform the country into an Intelligent Mauritius. “Any person or institution wishing to make use of the PKI will have to make an application to the certification authority, which will in turn provide them with a flash drive along with a pin number or password,” he explained.
