The Central Statistics Office (CSO) tracked the evolution of prices of different sub-indices during 2011.

It was found that the consumer price index (CPI) increased by 6 points from 124.4 in December 2010 to reach 130.4 in December 2011.

The rise of alcoholic beverages and tobacco by 16.2 per cent is mainly attributed to an increase in the price of cigarettes by 15.6 per cent and alcoholic beverages by 16.7 per cent. In terms of transport, a rise of 5.8 per cent was noted. This was mainly due to higher prices of gasoline that went up by 10.3 per cent, diesel by 16.1 per cent and air tickets by 5 per cent, among others.

The main reasons for the net increase in the CPI during 2011 were higher food prices, mainly meat, fish, cooking oil as well as higher price of cigarettes, higher bus and taxi fare as well as increases in the price of air tickets and private tuition fees.

The document also noted changes in the different sub-indices of consumption expenditure which contributed to the rise in prices during 2011. Prices of food increased by 4.1 per cent, housing, water and electricity by 0.8 per cent and alcoholic drinks and tobacco by 16.2 per cent.

The rise of 4.1 per cent in food was attributed to higher prices of meat that rose by 7.2 per cent, fish by 6.1 per cent, milk by 2.5 per cent and vegetables by 1.1 per cent.

However, it was offset by a fall of 9.7 per cent in the price of pulses.

Moreover, there was an increase of 5.3 per cent in education, which is the result of higher private tuition fees that rose by 5.3 per cent.
