Police officials arrested a French national, Maria Daisy Mailly Puylaurant, 62, for false and malicious denunciation in writing. She is a Réunion Island citizen. On Sunday, she had claimed that a taxi driver robbed 6,100 euro from her at Vacoas.
A police enquiry including the Vacoas Criminal Investigation Divion and the Crime Intelligence Unit was set up. On Monday, they arrested the driver, Bhanduth Ramgoolam, 41. He was quizzed by investigators and denied the charges.
Subsequently, Puylaurant was brought to the Vacoas CID office and after questioning retracted her statement. She confessed to having made a false declaration to the police. She stated that she organised a group tour comprising 23 persons and collected around 6,100 euro, which were supposed to be paid to Le Plaza hotel, Curepipe on her arrival.
She disclosed that she had spent the money in Réunion and feared a backslash from members of the group tour. She confessed to having concocted the above scenario and reported a false case against the taxi driver.
She was arrested and detained at the Midlands police station. Her passport has been secured. She will be presented at the District Court of Curepipe under a charge of false and malicious denunciation in writing.
