The Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) results were finally announced on Tuesday. A slight improvement has been noted in the overall performance of the students of the Republic of Mauritius including Mauritius, Rodrigues and Agalega. This year, the pass rate is 68.56 per cent compared to 68.54 per cent last year.
The total number of candidates examined stood at 23,176 including 15,890 students who passed the exams. In Mauritius, the pass rate is 68.84 per cent while in Rodrigues it is 62.68 per cent.
At a press conference held on Tuesday in Port Louis, the minister of Education and Human Resources, Dr Vasant Bunwaree expressed his satisfaction with the upward trend in the CPE results over the past few years.
“I must underline that the CPE level has been progressing year after year. It can be noted that the trend is on the rise since 2007 and we are moving in the right direction. Next week, we will hold the national consultative forum pertaining to reforms in CPE,” he said.
Dr Bunwaree also highlighted that the quality of education in Zones d’Education Prioritaires (ZEP) schools has improved where 11 out of 28 schools have scored over 40 per cent. “If they have obtained over 40 per cent, it means that they are no longer ZEP schools by definition. 282 out of 983 students have passed their exams and one student even scored an aggregate of 24,” added the minister.
Similarly, the pass rate among repeaters has increased to 39.54 per cent this year compared to 37.1 per cent in 2010. He assured parents that some 2,000 seats are available in colleges for students who have got ‘No School’ on their result slips.
From a gender point of view, girls once again outperformed the boys. The director of Mauritius Examinations Syndicate (MES), Professor Lucien Finette stated that the girls are more dedicated to studies than boys.
“Out of the 284 candidates who scored six A+, 200 are girls while only 84 are boys,” underlined Finette. He also said that there is a net improvement in Rodrigues. “In 2007, the pass rate stood at 49.6 per cent. It is 62.68 per cent this year.
Bravo to Rodrigues for this good performance,” he added.
