Tourist arrivals for the month of September decreased by 0.8 per cent compared to last year. These numbers were according to the monthly tourist statistics compiled by the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
Mauritius‘ main tourism market Europe registered a fall of 1.6 per cent in arrivals with 41,111 arrivals compared to 41,790 in 2010. France tops this list with 15,278 tourists, followed by England with 9,080 and Germany with 5,408 tourists.
For the month of September, tourists from Africa also registered a considerable 6.7 per cent decrease, with 14,114 arrivals compared to 15,121 in 2010. Tourist arrivals from Asia, Oceania and America, however, registered healthy increases of 5.3, 43.9, and 35.9 per cent respectively. India tops this list with 2,736 tourists followed by China and UAE.
Overall tourist arrivals for the year 2011, however, have improved by 4.3 per cent compared to 2010, with a total of 674,383 arrivals from January to September compared to 646,656 arrivals for the same time frame in 2010.
Indeed, Mauritius registered a 1.5, 3, 21.5, 47.5 and 7.8 per cent increase from Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania and America respectively.
