The Mauritius Society for the Prevention to Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) has been successfully conducting the campaign to pick up stray dogs. From June 17 to July 23, 2, 400 stray dogs were captured across the country.

This initiative of the Ministry of Agro-Industry and Food Security and the MSPCA aims to fight the problem of stray dogs and create a better environment.

Farook Khoodoruth, secretary of the MSPCA, is satisfied with the way the campaign is proceeding. He points out that a meeting will soon take place where the officers concerned will meet to assess the shortcomings of the campaign and discuss measures to be taken to improve efficiency.

Six vans are currently operational and the staff of the MSPCA is working hard to collect as many stray dogs as possible. The MSPCA’s objective is to catch 3,000 dogs every month.

Khoodoruth said that 60 per cent of the stray dogs are captured near markets and restaurants in the cities.

He stated that there have been complaints from some owners as their dogs were caught. However, the secretary pointed out that when a dog is found on the street, it is considered a stray and the MSPCA acts accordingly. The owners have three days to claim their dogs and must pay a fine of Rs 1,200.

The MSPCA also separates the healthy dogs that are harmless. The puppies are put up for adoption.

Instead of working on a long-lasting solution, the killing will go on and on.
Studies have shown that killing doesn’t help: if the dogs get removed, their “empty space” offers new room and food for new strays: if there is only one litter of puppies they easily take over the place of the others. Sterilisation is the only solution. Not only seen from a humane, but also from a scientific point of view.
That dogs spread diseases is a myth that has been lasting since the middle ages. Germs who harm humans are best adapted to be spread – through humans. A dog is a different organism and would cause a germ “extra trouble” to adapt – and then to get back to a human. Means: every other human being is a bigger threat to a human than a dog..

I absolutely agree with “Papaya’s” comments!
Question to the INDEPENDENT – can you tell your readers how MSPCA kills all that many dogs in so little time?

I also totally agree with you guys
what a loud of Bull this article is. it isnt something to celebrate.
someone offered to sterilize the population of stray dogs for you for free but you turned it down in favour of murdering these defenceless animals most of which arent even strays and just peoples pets. some woman had her pet dogs snatched while she was walking them. how can that be called a stray. she was four foot away from them but they were still taken.
this is all done just to line your own filthy pockets. the only strays and vermin are those who can justify torturing and killing these poor animals for some twisted sense of satisfaction and the money you’re paid for it.
i dont know who is worse, the government for allowing it and doing nothing about it or these so called ‘dog catchers’.
you should all be ashamed of yourselves and i hope for your sakes that you’re never rounded up in nets, thrown into the back of vans, left to starve and then given botched lethal injections before being left to die a slow agonising death and then thrown into a shallow grave.
        this makes me sick.
