Starting from February, all trucks, buses and goods vehicles visiting fitness centres of the National Transport Authority (NTA) will get a fitness certificate for a period of six months if their vehicles are not equipped with speed limiters.
If a vehicle has a speed limiter, their fitness certificate will be valid for a period of one to two years. This information was given by an NTA officer.
From July 1, all vehicles must have a speed limiter. The new regulation of the Ministry of Public Transport, National Development Unit, Land Transport and Shipping would have come into force last year but faced delays.
The new licence plates of cars will also come into force on July 1. The numbers and letters will be inscribed in white on a black background. They will be standardised with white in the front and yellow at the rear.
Hassam Bhaye Bhewa, president of the trucks association, has condemned this attitude of the Ministry of Public Transport and Infrastructure.
“We do not know where we will put the speed limiter. A limiter costs Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 and we do not have money. Our association regroups about 200 truck drivers and is expected to protest against the state of things if the government fails to listen to us.”
Bhewa hopes that a solution is reached on friendly grounds, along with the concerned authorities.
