The Mauritian government has offered $2,000 to each of the families of the Bangladeshi victims who died in a road accident at St Julien d'Hotman on January 12.
This announcement was made by the deputy prime minister and minister of Energy, Dr Rashid Beebeejaun, at the inauguration of BCC Family School, a private school, on Sunday in Port Louis.
The accident led to the death of the 11 people, including 10 Bangladeshis and the Mauritian driver of the minibus carrying the foreign workers to the textile factory where they were employed as machinists.
Beebeejaun said that some of the Bangladeshis had contracted loans of up to Rs 300,000 to come to work in Mauritius.
The government has facilitated the repatriation of the bodies offering air transport with the personal intervention of Prime Minister Dr Navin Ramgoolam and with the support of the consulate of Bangladesh and of the minister of Labour, Shakeel Mohamed.
It is likely that the telethon that was to be organised at the Municipality of Port Louis to collect aid for the victims will be postponed or simply called off.
A meeting will be held on Monday at the municipality to take a final decision.
However, Beebeejaun said that other sources of contribution could be considered.
