Officers of the Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT) finally made a breakthrough in the gruesome murder case of Hélène Lam Po Tang (61), who was stabbed to death on October 13.
On October 16, they arrested a man named Pasnin, a resident of Morcellement Swan, Baie-du-Tombeau, who will be brought before the court in Port Louis on Monday.
According to the police, the suspect is a Habitual Criminal (HC) and has been arrested for theft at different regions of the island. A police warrant was issued against him for being a party to the murder of Lam Po Tang and is now in police custody.
Although two other suspects were also arrested in connection with the murder, they were released on parole after interrogation.
Another person questioned is the driver who used to take out the victim. The gardener of Lam Po Tang, Dayanand Ramgutty gave the investigators an alibi, stating that he was not present on the premises at the time of the crime.
According to the investigators, Ramgutty always had a set of the house keys in his possession.
On October 17, Pasnin was interrogated by the MCIT. According to sources, several witnesses saw the suspect lurking around the house of the victim at Avenue Des Roses, Morcellement Swan, on the day of the murder.
According to one of the relatives, Lam Po Tang often left the door unlocked and thus any one could easily enter the house.
Though Pasnin has been arrested, SP Yussuf Soopun’s officers might also consider investigating masons working on a construction site opposite Lam Po Tang’s house with regards to the murder.
The police may also summon other Lam Po Tang family members to the MCIT office to help solve the case. Gary Lam Po Tang, the victim’s husband, will in fact be summoned to the Line Barracks during the week for the second time after he was first questioned in the afternoon of October 16.
The aim was to ascertain the victim’s habits and the family’s social position. The couple’s status also brought forward some questions by the investigators.
The unit of the Scene of Crime Officers and investigators returned to the scene in order to look for clues.
Gary Lam Po Tang, who was a regular at casinos and a passionate roulette player, has sought the police’s permission not to visit the crime scene at the moment as he was still under shock. The investigators have not objected, and the mapping exercise will be done later.
At the Line Barracks, the case was filed as a high profile case so much so that the commissioner of police is personally following it very closely.
He even met the investigators to take stock of the situation.
The funeral ceremony of Lam Po Tang will be held at Immaculate Conception church at 10 am on Monday morning.
