The 8th and 9th Conventions 2009-2010 of the Civic Action Teams (CATs) in the education sector is a platform for students to discuss the problems faced by their schools. Students identified most of the common problems through CATs project, this is initiated by the National Productivity and Competiveness Council (NPCC).

The students took part in the project in June while the prize ceremony was held on Thursday at the University of Mauritius (UoM), in the presence of the ministers, Michael Sik Yuen and Vasant Bunwaree.

The students must gather data and analysis tools made available by the CATs and, then, find solutions to solve the problems.

Last February, around 100 institutions initiated the civic action project in various educational zones in Mauritius and Rodrigues. Trophies and certificates were awarded to primary and secondary schools students.

For the 8th Convention 2009, Batatran Govt School, Rodrigues won the first prize for their project, entitled ‘better future with appropriate eating habits’.

In the secondary school category, it was DAV the College of Morcellement St André who was declared the winner.

The theme of the project was the ‘lack of team spirit among learners’. For the 9th Convention held this year, the primary school, Ramnarain Roy Govt School won the first prize for their project, ‘Absence of a Science lab’. In the secondary school category, Terre Rouge SSS bagged the first prize.

Their topic was ‘setting up of a multi purpose student lunch and recreational corner’. The convention was postponed last year because of the swine flu that had occurred. On August 18 and 19, around 300 students from primary and secondary schools participated in the two editions, 2009 and 2010.

During these two days, there were power point presentations, sketches and posters for at least forty projects. The CATs, through this project, aims to inculcate an early sense of responsibility, vis-à-vis the school and the local community.
