The construction of the Abercrombie market will be completed in March 2011. This new project, built at a cost of Rs 54 million, is financed by the Local Infrastructure Fund and the municipal council of Port Louis.
The double storey market will have a space for crafts and a dancing hall besides parking facilities.
The president of the Ad Hoc Committee Abercrombie Market/ Fair Fritz Thomas said that there is a delay in the launch.
The project began on April 5 and should have been completed in November this year but was delayed till March 2011 as some merchants refused to vacate the space.
They wanted this project to be extended. “We had to relocate them at Ducray street and we provided them with shelter and fortunately they accepted,” said Thomas.
Then the butchers and fishmongers objected to the construction and even complained in the court. During the trial, the company Ireko which had the contract lost more time. However, now the situation is back to normal and work has started again.
The other two floors will be built after the construction of the ground floor, which will house the vegetables and fruit sellers and butchers. Thomas said that the dance hall is very important as there is not one in Abercrombie.

Good job thanks to municipal p louis for the new market. Hope to get a good parking space.
And no illegal hawkers around this “bijoux de st croix”.
